We are looking into some options for our forum, like email notification, to give you a similar "push" to what you experience from a mailing list, while still keeping all of the data in one location.
I guess I'm going to be the one old timer that isn't too surprised or upset by this. One, the beta list stays, which makes sense because RB needs to make it as convenient as possible since they are getting free testing and feedback in return.
I've been using other forums for a while and so long as I can get an email when a new topic pops up and when I get a response back from something I posted, I really don't care.
I personally don't find them that slow, but I have a fast connection and maybe am just lucky.
It's obvious that the real reason for this is to drive more usage to the forums which is another way to plaster the RB name in the search engines. Frankly, it's a very smart move when one looks at the big picture.
Considering the other issues with RB that have caused me great pain over the years, I just don't think this a huge deal. And I really don't think it's going to cause the "elders" to disappear, either. I'm betting that non-RS sponsored mailing lists will probably be mere shadows of the RS-sponsored ones. Also, it in an advantage to have the RS engineering staff officially monitor the forums.
Sure, there are a fair number of 13 year old posters, so what? Aaron and the others are not spending *that* much time on them.
There have been actual RB issues that have prompted me to re-evaluate my use of RB, but dumping the lists is not even remotely in the same league of importance, IMHO. My world won't come to an end because of this as opposed to some of the other issues, which cost me $$$$$$$.
My suggestion is take a deep breath and let RS implement the improvements Dana has suggested. That said, RS needs to make those changes ASAP!!!!!
