The composite flag of the Window that has the EditField makes all the difference. With the flag set, the blinking cursor disappears on each key press. With the flag *unset*, all is well.

I just had an idea. Unless I'll wake up tomorrow with the solution sitting in my inbox I'll save the project (with one 'good' and one 'bad' EditField) as XML; open it in TextEdit, remove everything but the two EditFields from the XML source and see how both EditFields differ. It should show something.
