The forums and NUG are probably only the tip of the iceberg  
(certainly if Geoff's numbers are right and there are more than  
100,000 users).

between the quantity of people on the NUG and forums, and the total  
quantity of users.

That's why I have the impression that if the activity on the NUG and  
forums goes down, then the total number of real users goes down in  
the same proportion.

Another explanation could be that if there are mainly Mac users on  
the NUG and the NUG activity lowers, then RS is only bleeding its Mac  
customers, but the overall customer base might perhaps still grow.  I  
dunno, and as you said we'll probably never know.

At any rate, there are still plenty of us out here.  That's for  
sure!  :-)
