[28] Fergie post-match in full

"Both of us will drop points. It is the name of the game. But how we cope is
important. "Only true champions can come out of such disappointments and show
their worth and I expect us to do that. We are still six points clear and we
mustn't forget that. There is big disappointment in the dressing room but when
I look at things now I think the result and the experience of losing so late
will be good for us. We have some important away games to come at places like
Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester City, and if we get into that winning
position again we won't be making mistakes like we made today again - I can
tell you that for sure. We've lost two goals from positions where we didn't
think we'd lose them. But that's football. After controlling the first half, we
were in a good position and defending well. We had some good possession and
probably should have done better with it, but these games are always difficult
and you can never really dominate for 90 minutes in matches like this. After we
scored we sat back about 10 yards and their long balls up towards Henry and
Adebayor began to force us back a little bit. But I still couldn't see anything
that was going to disturb us. I'm not scratching my head and worrying about
form or anything like that. Yes, we're disappointed, but our form is good and
in Michael Carrick I thought we had the best player on the pitch - he was
absolutely magnificent. So with players like that in our side with good ability
we know we're going to be okay. The funny thing is [after this weekend] we've
now got a game less left to play and we're a goal better off after Chelsea's
result at Liverpool so it's not all doom and gloom."

'Giuseppe Rossi marked a sensational Parma debut with the only goal in a 1-0
win over Torino. The Italian U21 striker, who was outstanding throughout, beat
four defenders before hammering in his late strike.

Phil Bardsley made his Aston Villa debut against Ben Foster's Watford as the
Villans notched a first win since November against the Hornets. The Salford
defender impressed, but Foster's heroics in goal stole the show - despite two
late Villa goals sealing another defeat for Watford.

Gerard Pique turned in a solid performance for Real Zaragoza, but his side were
held to a 0-0 draw by Recreativo Huelva to dent their Champions League
aspirations.

Jonny Evans completed 90 minutes for Sunderland as Roy Keane's side moved to
within goal difference of the Championship playoff zone, with a 4-2 win at
Sheffield Wednesday.

Tim Howard marked his return to form with a clean sheet as Everton won 2-0 at
struggling Wigan, courtesy of a second-half brace from Mikel Arteta.

Adam Eckersley helped Championship strugglers Barnsley to a much-needed 2-0 win
at Luton Town to grab three priceless points in the Tykes' fight against
relegation.

Danny Rose completed 90 minutes for Oxford in their 2-2 home draw with Grays, a
result which keeps the Us three points off Conference leaders Dagenham &
Redbridge.

Royal Antwerp were not in action, giving Fraizer Campbell, Darron Gibson, Ryan
Shawcross and David Gray a weekend off.'

the Champions League as well as the FA Cup. The three big aims are still in

"This team is developing into young, hungry lions, led well by Henry. He was
not served well today but he did not give up, worked hard for the team and in
the end he got rewarded. I like to see the team playing at home, 1-0 down
against the leader of the league, and go on to win. That can only make you
stronger for the coming matches. When we were 1-0 down I put as many strikers
on the pitch as I could. Maybe we were fearing a counter-attack but in the
second half they didn't create a lot."

"It will open it up for everybody, for us and Liverpool a little bit less… but
you never know. It's good for the interest of the championship. We maybe have
less of a chance than the others but we will fight to win every game. Man
United played well, they scored a great goal. I think they wanted so much to
kill time that it turned against them. We looked a bit nervous in the first
half but in the second half we took over. We went until the end because we
really wanted to win, and in the last 20 minutes it was all us."

If you wanted to draw a comparison between Chelsea and Manchester United on
what was a pivotal weekend for the Premiership, take a look at the two managers
on the touchline.

At the Emirates Stadium yesterday evening, Sir Alex Ferguson was going berserk
with the fourth official, while at Anfield Jose Mourinho stood with his hands
in his pockets looking resigned to defeat. That attitude was reflected on the
pitch. Both teams may have lost but not only are Manchester United playing far
better, their players appear much hungrier for success.

Had Manchester United managed to hold off Arsenal for the last few minutes
yesterday, the championship race would have been all but over. A nine-point
lead with a massive advantage in goal difference should not be insurmountable
in January but it does not happen easily to any team. And given Chelsea's
recent displays it would have to rank as one of the great sporting comebacks of
all time.

The performance they delivered at Anfield on Saturday was the most embarrassing
I have seen under Mourinho. Their defensive weaknesses without John Terry and
Petr Cech are obvious but against Liverpool they were inept going forward and
showed a sometimes shocking lack of commitment. Even with a gap of six points,
attitudes will have to change radically for Chelsea to come back into the race
because this was a result that had been coming for several weeks.

Usually, they have been saved by Didier Drogba, but you cannot possibly hope to
rely on one man and on Saturday he came up against Jamie Carragher in
magnificent form. Even Frank Lampard, who Chelsea also rely on to dig them out
of trouble, looked ordinary.

advertisement

That's what happens when the owner and the manager stop talking. Footballers
retreat into their comfort zones – they have something to blame for poor
performances.

That's why yesterday's defeat will not hurt Manchester United too deeply. The
result would have been bitterly disappointing but the performances were good.
In my experience it is very rare that a top-class defence, which has played as
well as Manchester United's did, should concede goals in the 84th and 91st
minutes.

When the season began and Mourinho had spent big money on top of the millions
Roman Abramovich had already made available to bring in Andrei Shevchenko,
Ballack and Ashley Cole, I thought Chelsea might be on the brink of a period of
domination unprecedented in English football. Manchester United and Liverpool
had won the championship three times on the trot but I could see Chelsea
winning it for the next six years.

Mourinho had a squad so strong that injuries and loss of form had been simply
taken out of the equation. Whatever the club's public pronouncements, something
has gone shockingly wrong at Stamford Bridge.

What was as astonishing was Mourinho's language in defeat. Where was the
fighting talk? Instead Mourinho sounded resigned to it all, beaten before the
game had started.

What might have surprised him was how Liverpool went for the throat. Rafael
Benitez has sometimes been a cautious manager and might have reminded himself
that the last time Chelsea had come to Anfield, they had won 4-1. Here, he
picked the right team in the right formation. What Liverpool need is a
consistency of mood around Anfield. For too long the club have switched between
optimism, doom and gloom and back to optimism.

Arsenal's record against the top sides has long been outstanding but this has
been a month when they have answered a lot of questions, particularly in the
north.

Last weekend at Blackburn, they were on a ground where they had traditionally
done badly, in appalling conditions with the wind and rain driving into their
faces and they would have known what kind of tactics were coming. They lost
Gilberto Silva but they won the game and perhaps these kind of games are no
longer a shock to them, while the wins over Liverpool and Manchester United
merely confirmed the array of young talent Arsene Wenger has built up.

Their future is secure but what Chelsea's future is nobody knows.

[17] Bale £10m bid?
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, January 22, 2007 by ed:
from BBC

Southampton's resolve to keep Gareth Bale will be tested by an approach to sell
the teenager for up to £10m. BBC Radio Solent say an unnamed club has sounded
out Saints on the prospect of selling the 17-year-old Wales star.

Manchester United and Tottenham have had bids rejected for the full-back and
boss George Burley insists he will not be sold in the transfer window.

Burley told the Saints website: "At some point Gareth will go but he will be
here until the end of the season."

Bale has recently turned down Southampton's offer of a one-year extension to
his contract, the most Saints are able to offer a player of his age.

Tottenham are believed to have opened the auction for Bale with a £6m bid,
which was rejected.

Saints are then thought to have snubbed Manchester United's £8m offer for Bale,
while Liverpool and Newcastle are also thought to be interested.

Burley is desperate to keep Bale, who is a key part of Saints' promotion bid.

He is resigned to losing Bale at some stage but feels the young defender's
development would be best served by staying at the Championship club.

The Saints boss feels Bale could learn from Theo Walcott, who has only flirted
with first-team football at Arsenal since his £12m move last year.

Walcott played his last game for Southampton almost a year ago to the week at
QPR and Burley is determined the 2-0 win at Loftus Road on Saturday will not
mark Bale's last appearance in a Southampton shirt.

Burley said: "You can't beat playing regularly for your development and at
bigger clubs it is harder to get in the team.

"His parents are very pleased with his progress and feel this is a good place
for him to learn his football and the improvement has been there to be seen.

"I know he is going to go at some point but I want to keep him as long as
possible."

"During half-time, the coach told us. He asked us to remain focused and strong
because Manchester will give up physically in the last 20 minutes. He said:
'They are not the same anymore after 70 minutes'. Once again, the coach was
right! We have to be honest, Manchester played very well and we had
difficulties to play our game. They countered us very well. But Arsenal is not
only a team that plays nice football, it is also a team that never gives up. I
believe I achieved a good match. It is not a secret that I prefer to play in
the midfield. The coach trusts me. Competition is very tough at Arsenal, you
have to fight during each match. But that's just like that in a great club and
I enjoy it."
