[20] Glenda on our defence
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, February 4, 2007 by tb:
"United will have the added advantage of having their full squad available.

"This will be one of the testing away games they have before the end of the
season and they can go into it without the distraction of having to juggle the
team.

"They have defended well this year - Gary Neville is as good as ever, Nemanja
Vidic looks a powerful centre-back while both Patrice Evra and Gabriel Heinze
are excellent left backs. Add Paul Scholes to the midfield and there is one
powerful team."

---------------------------------
[19] Glenda on Wayne
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, February 4, 2007 by tb:
"And I have been so taken by the way Wayne Rooney has been playing. He is the
jewel in United's crown.

"He is a magnificent player but even when it is not his day, he has found a way
to contribute to the team in other areas.

"Wayne really can make a difference - as he did when he came on against
Portsmouth in the FA Cup last week. He won United the tie."

---------------------------------
[18] Glenda on Ronaldo
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, February 4, 2007 by tb:
"I've rarely seen someone mature as a player like he has over the last year.

"He has learned when to do his tricks, when to pass the ball, when to shoot,
when to play three-touch football. That could be down to him, his team-mates or
the management. I suspect it's a bit of all three. But he has become some
player, no question.

The more he gets jeered, the better he seems to play."

---------------------------------
[17] Glenda on this afternoon
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, February 4, 2007 by tb:
"In many ways, facing United is the best thing that could happen.

"If it had been a lesser team there would be a different expectation from the
fans, a different atmosphere at the ground. But the important thing is the
Spurs players have to believe they can win, the mind-set has to be right.

"They certainly have enough players to give United problems with the pace of
Jermain Defoe and Aaron Lennon.

"At the back they are going to need all the defensive resolve of Michael
Dawson. He does the same kind of job John Terry does for Chelsea - if there's a
tackle to be made, a block to made or a header to be won, it's so often Dawson
who's there."

[16] Chance meeting?
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, February 4, 2007 by tb:
>From the Suday Mirror:

CRISTIANO Ronaldo met Real Madrid officials during his mid-season break in
Dubai.

Sir Alex Ferguson gave his blessing to the trip after deciding to rest Ronaldo
last weekend.

But United were shocked to discover - after a Sunday Mirror Sport investigation
- that Madrid officials had been staying at the same hotel.

Quizzed by United yesterday, Ronaldo insisted it was a chance meeting and that
he had bumped into the Real delegation as he was leaving the hotel.

But in Spain, sources close to Real Madrid claim that club officials outlined
their future plans to Ronaldo and his agent, who was with him.

Real's delegation were in Dubai visiting a football academy in the area.

There is no suggestion that Ronaldo, who is 22 tomorrow, and Madrid were
involved in illegal talks.

But the Old Trafford hierarchy are becoming tired by the continued specualation
linking their young star with a summer move to the Bernabeu. In Spain Ronaldo
is openly named as Real's prime transfer target for the summer.

Ronaldo has a desire to play in Spain one day and both Real and Barcelona have
made it clear they would be interested in signing him.

Ferguson has insisted Ronaldo, who still has more than three years to run on
his current contract, is not for sale.

Old Traf ford chief executive David Gill has said United would not even sell
the Madeira-born ace for a world record £45m.

[15] Jol : I was right about Carrick
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, February 4, 2007 by tb:
"I was the only one who said last year that he was a very influential player
and now he's making them tick in midfield and they are top of the league."

"So hopefully everyone agrees now."

"He's functional and never dwells on the ball, he sees space and makes more
interceptions than people give him credit for."

"He's always in the right place, covering the defence. At our club we do the
same things but look different - that's because of him."

Out now, and highly recommended, Andy Mitten interviews 11 famous United
players for their story

[14] Fergie speaking from experience
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, February 4, 2007 by tb:
"Tottenham have got the resources and the history that suggests there shouldn't
be a gap that is there at the moment and I think the ambitions of Martin Jol
are beyond that.

"He's got ambitions to make them better and you can't just do it in one year.
You need four or five years really to implement the vision of the club and the
development of the team."

---------------------------------
[13] Ronaldo's agent had the hairdryer?
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, February 4, 2007 by tb:
"It's normal that half the world is asking after Cristiano because every game
he is delivering exhibition performances."

"Manchester United have repeated their intention not to sell him, and I would
do the same if I was a United director.

"It's no secret there is interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona. For us, the
matter does not exist and what we are negotiating is the renewal of his
contract."

[12] Us and Arsenal the entertainers
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, February 4, 2007 by tb:
Giggsy:

“We both play football the right way, yet differently.”

“Our style has always been to get it out wide to the wings to supply the
strikers. They play it through the middle more, they don’t play with wingers.
Rosicky and Hleb both come inside all the time, they don’t look to go past
their man on the outside. We’ve got different methods but they are a good team
to watch, and I like Fabregas. He’s a smashing player. Like Ronaldo, for one so
young he’s fantastically consistent. Neither of them ever seems to have a bad
game.”

---------------------------------
[11] Giggsy on surprises
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, February 4, 2007 by tb:
“Arsenal beating us 2-1 was a big result for them, and a shock for us.” “But
with the lead we’ve got, something horrible would have to happen to us to let
them, or Liverpool, back in it.”

---------------------------------
[10] Giggsy on the 2 R's
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, February 4, 2007 by tb:
“They are mates, genuine mates,” says Giggs. “They have the same interests in
music, watch the same things on TV and get on really well. They are the two
pranksters in the dressing room. If shoes go missing or clothes get soaked,
it’s them. They are a bit like Butty and I used to be when we were their age —
with all the banter and the practical jokes.”

[9] Giggsy: Scholesy and Ronaldo the difference
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, February 4, 2007 by tb:
“They’ve been outstanding.”

“Having Scholesy back has been brilliant, restoring strength to the heart of
the side.” Ronaldo had been expected to move on, after his contretemps with
Rooney at the World Cup in July. Instead he stayed, took the abuse on the chin
and came out fighting with an “I’ll show you” attitude that has seen him rival
Ronaldinho as the best player in the world.

“What happened in the summer, the sort of publicity it got and the away fans’
reaction, that sort of thing can sometimes be the making of you. You either
buckle under it and leave or show your mettle and let your football do the
talking. For such a young man, Cristiano has handled it unbelievably well. The
way he is playing and the goals he’s scoring have been a major part of our
improvement.”

---------------------------------
[8] Giggsy on stuffing Bolton
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, February 4, 2007 by tb:
“I don’t think they’d conceded a goal at home before that, and we just took
them apart.”

“It could have been six or seven before half-time. That first half-hour was the
best we’ve played for years.

It’s not often you get every player on song, as we were that afternoon.
Everything we tried came off. Our attacking play was the best I’ve seen for a
long time, and it was that day we realised we were the best in the league
again.”

---------------------------------
[7] Giggsy on getting a good start
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, February 4, 2007 by tb:
“When the manager addressed us in the summer, he said we couldn’t afford to let
Chelsea establish a lead the way they had the two previous seasons. We had to
put them under pressure. Above all, he stressed the need to get off to a good
start. We scored five on the opening day (beating Fulham 5-1) and never looked
back.

“It was important not to get paranoid about Chelsea and have them weigh on our
minds all the time, so we made a deliberate effort to concentrate only on our
own game, to make a good start and build on that.”

---------------------------------
[6] Giggsy on selling Ruud
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, February 4, 2007 by tb:
“When you lose somebody who scored so many, and who was such a great player, it
does worry you a bit.”

“But when you think about it, whenever we’ve been successful it has never been
down to one man’s goals. When we’ve won the league the burden has been spread
around, between the likes of Sparky, Cole, Yorke, Teddy, Ole, myself, Scholesy,
Becks, Brucey and of course Eric. That’s what we’re doing now in the league,
with Cristiano (Ronaldo, 14 goals), Wayne (Rooney, 10), Louis Saha (eight), Ole
(six), Scholesy (four) and now Henrik Larsson (two).

Paul McGrath's Back from the Brink

---------------------------------
[5] Giggsy on Fergie pre season
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, February 4, 2007 by tb:
“He was looking forward to the challenge.”

“He’d seen the foundations for a new team laid last season, when we finished
strongly, he knew important players were coming back and he’d seen the
potential of Patrice and Vids, who he had signed in the transfer window 12
months ago. Putting that all together, he knew we’d be better equipped to
compete for every trophy this time, not just the Premiership. The feeling in
the dressing room was of great confidence. We thought we’d have a really good
chance, as long as the big players stayed fit.”

---------------------------------
[4] Giggsy on pre season expectations
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, February 4, 2007 by tb:
“Maybe outside the club people felt it would be the same story again, but we
knew that from midway through last season we were getting better.”

“For a long time the midfield every week had been me and John O’Shea, which
wasn’t good enough, but we had Michael Carrick coming in and Scholesy coming
back, so we knew we were going to be stronger there. Ole and Gabby were also
available again, and those players gave us that extra edge that comes from real
competition for places.

“Having 20 players fit and competing has been the difference this season.
Nearly all the time the manager has had 18-20 to pick from, so the lads in the
side are looking over their shoulders, thinking, ‘I’ve got to play well every
week, or else . . .’ We didn’t have that last season.”

[3] Jol compares Lennon to Ronaldo
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, February 4, 2007 by tb:
'No. He's younger, he has less experience. Ronaldo, he's scored 12, 13 goals
already. Lennon didn't. So, let's be honest. Look at the production: Ronaldo is
probably the best in England on the wing. With assists, he's probably been
involved in 20 goals. Lennon has probably been involved in five or six. But you
have to see how many chances Lennon already has created. He's on his way to
being, possibly, like Ronaldo.'

[11] O'Shea on Larsson
---------------------------------
Posted Saturday, February 3, 2007 by tb:
"You can see from the impact he has had and the goals he has scored already
that he is a top-class player and it is a privilege to train and play with him.

"He gave the squad a little boost at a good time when difficult games were
coming up, and it will be sad to see him go if he does go."

[10] O'Shea on title race
---------------------------------
Posted Saturday, February 3, 2007 by tb:
"We are just looking at ourselves and we know it is going to be a tough game on
Sunday and we have got tough games to come. But with the form we are in we are
feeling very positive at the moment.

"You know what games are coming up and how difficult they are but we keep
thinking after each game that that is another game down. Last time we won the
league we went to these places and won these games, and that is what we have to
do now."

[9] O'Shea on getting splinters
---------------------------------
Posted Saturday, February 3, 2007 by tb:
"It is obviously frustrating when you are not playing week in, week out but
that is the case when everyone is fit and you are top of the league. The
manager has big decisions to make and when you get your chance you have got to
take it.

"Everyone is chomping at the bit to get into the team. In the last couple of
seasons we have had vital players missing for months but this season we have
coped with everything that has been thrown at us and you can see we are
enjoying it."

[6] Italian football suspended indefinitely
---------------------------------
Posted Saturday, February 3, 2007 by tb:
>From The Guardian:

 http://football.guardian.co.uk/News_Story/0,,2005147,00.html
http://football.guardian.co.uk/News_Story/0,,2005147,00.html

Football in Italy has been suspended indefinitely after a police officer died
during fan violence at a Serie A match between two Sicilian teams last night.
The action includes all Serie A and B matches and Italy's friendly with Romania
scheduled for next Wednesday.

"I have demanded a stop to all activity of football in Italy," said the Italian
football federation commissioner, Luca Pancalli, after an emergency meeting.
"Enough is enough. It's a situation that I cannot speak of. To lose your life
at 38 is incredible. This is not a sport. The football tournaments will remain
suspended until we solve the violence in our football."

Rioting fans forced the Catania v Palermo match to be suspended in the 58th
minute - with Palermo leading 1-0 - after tear-gas filled the Angelo Massimino
stadium. The match restarted after about 30 minutes but the violence continued
after the game, which Palermo won 2-1. According to reports the officer, named
as Filippo Raciti, died after an explosive device struck him in the face
outside the stadium. He was taken to hospital where he died from his injuries.

About 100 people were reported to be injured, some seriously, after fighting in
the build-up to the game and throughout the evening, and after the final
whistle the players and staff were held in the stadium by police while the area
was secured.

"I am extremely disappointed. Things cannot continue like this," said the
Palermo coach, Francesco Guidolin. "We had to go back to the changing rooms
because we couldn't breathe. If we cannot get into our heads that football is a
sport we cannot live in the world of football."

The Palermo president, Maurizio Zamparini, said: "This evening no one has won.
We have all lost. These people are not fans but are delinquents that in other
countries like England would have been arrested and seriously punished. We need
more severe laws."

Posted Saturday, February 3, 2007 by tb:
"I think we've had our blip. West Ham away was our blip. Arsenal, 1-0 up with
nine minutes to go, was a blip."

"There's no point thinking you're going to get any easy points because that
won't happen."

"We've got to be ready for the difficult tasks and the challenges. That's what
winning the championship is about."

Posted Saturday, February 3, 2007 by tb:
"That's possible."

"Everyone has their own ambition to improve their club. Particularly when a new
manager comes in they will give him the support needed.

"Because it is Ottmar Hitzfeld and he had great experience with Bayern in the
past they will obviously listen to him. So it is an obvious worry for us."

Posted Saturday, February 3, 2007 by tb:
"I don't think there is any doubt he has always had a fantastic talent with
balance and use of the ball, and his technique for a centre-back is probably
the best in the game. The area in which he has improved in is his
concentration."

"He and Vidic have formed a good partnership and it will get better because
they are young.

"I think I rested him for one game and I don't think the number of games will
affect him. He is a strong athlete and I have been delighted with him."

[1] Jol misses Carrick

Posted Saturday, February 3, 2007 by tb:
"We've realised we miss Michael Carrick. His biggest quality was to move play
from defence to attack and win the ball. Because of him, other players played
better.

"Tom Huddlestone has that quality but he has just turned 20 and he still has to
make the next stage in his development."

on as well — it is going to be a very difficult race."

"We've got to make up six points on Manchester United in 13 games - seven
really to go ahead. What that means is that we've just got to go on winning
games because we can't really afford to lose points. If we do go on winning
games, they can't afford to lose points. The race is on. We're in the final of
the Carling Cup. We entered the competition to win it and that's still what we
intend to do. We're in the fifth round of the FA Cup and we've been drawn at
home against lower-league opposition. If we are not lazy or arrogant or stupid,
or extremely unlucky, we ought to go into the quarter-finals."

[30] Fergie baffled by Liverpool move
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, February 2, 2007 by ed:
"[Liverpool] got Mascherano and I don't know how they managed that. They got
him on a sort of loan basis and I don't know how it's happened. The only thing
I can think is that because Brazil's season is different from ours, it is
because of that, which is strange.''

[29] Fergie praise for Carrick
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, February 2, 2007 by ed:
"I thought Carrick ran the show for us on Wednesday night and he was brilliant
against Arsenal. I think he has settled in and he has improved physically as
the season has gone on. We have seen that development in the lad and we
probably expected that anyway because as a kid at West Ham he was a rakish and
lanky young man and you know when you see a player like that he will develop
physically. He is exactly like that and now we are seeing a player who has come
to good age and showed good maturity and he is an absolutely sensational passer
of the ball. He creates chances and gives us opportunities and that is why we
bought him.''

[28] Fergie on away games
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, February 2, 2007 by ed:
"We probably have harder away games than Chelsea and we have to acquit
ourselves properly in these matches. Analysing all the games is pointless
really. We have got a tough game on Sunday and if we get through that it is one
more up the road.''
