Manchester United's accounts for the year ending June 2006, lodged today at Companies House, reveal that the chief executive received £1,138,000 in salary for the year with a pension top-up of £142,000, a total of £1,280,000. This represents a significant increase on his package for the previous year, when he received around £1.1m in salary and pension. The handsome rise puts Gill on a par with Chelsea's Peter Kenyon in football's executive pay scale, though it is more modest than some had predicted. Gill defied predictions that he would be forced out by the new owners and has been a crucial figure in stabilising the club following the June 2005 takeover. He has an amicable working relationship with Joel Glazer, acting as a bridge to the manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, a relationship cited by sources at the club as a contributory factor in their current good form. Gill will focus almost entirely on football issues when the current executive recruitment round is complete. The commercial director, Andy Anson, and finance director, Nick Humby, leave the club today, and Humby will be replaced by a chief operating officer who will take over all of Gill's current responsibilities save for governance and football matters.' --------------------------------- [27] Tories could bring standing back? --------------------------------- Posted Thursday, February 1, 2007 by ed: from the Indy 'Terraces could return to football grounds under a Tory government, David Cameron said yesterday. The Conservative leader said there was evidence that other countries managed to organise safe standing areas, and pledged to launch a review of the current strict regulations in the UK if he came to power. But he insisted the "first priority" must be safety following the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, in which more than 90 fans died. Answering questions from visitors to his website, Cameron said: "Obviously the first priority here has got to be safety after the dreadful events at Hillsborough. "But I understand that other countries manage to organise things in a slightly different way, and there may be some more modern ways of organising the limited seating areas. "What I would say is that when we come into government I would ask the sports minister to review the existing regulations to take into account the views of the football authorities, the police, the clubs, the fans, and we will have a really good look at this." More than 100 MPs have signed an early-day motion from Mike Hancock, the Lib Dem member for Portsmouth South, which calls on the Government to "re-examine the case for limited sections of safe standing areas". Currently clubs in England's top two divisions are legally obliged to have all-seater stadia. Sports minister, Richard Caborn - MP for Sheffield Central at the time of the Hillsborough disaster - has expressed his opposition to reintroducing terraces.' --------------------------------- [26] SUN reckon Bale still on --------------------------------- Posted Thursday, February 1, 2007 by ed: 'Gareth Bale snubbed a £10milllion move to Tottenham in order to join Manchester United in the summer. The Southampton starlet visited Tottenham after the clubs agreed a fee. But Bale, 17, decided to delay making a decision on his future until the end of the season. The teenager, who faced Sheffield Wednesday last night, is keen to go to Old Trafford and United boss Alex Ferguson sees him as a long-term successor to Ryan Giggs. Fergie has bid £8m for the left-back with up to £3m of that linked to appearances,' --------------------------------- [25] Fergie on Rooney goals --------------------------------- Posted Thursday, February 1, 2007 by ed: "I have been saying for a while now that, if Wayne can get on a run where he starts scoring one a game, it will make an incredible difference to us." Sir Alex Ferguson may soon forget the frustration of attempting to improve his squad with Owen Hargreaves and Gareth Bale this month if Rooney, instrumental in all four goals as United eventually stamped style and superiority on basement club Watford, maintains the form and exuberance that has coursed through his veins since breaking his barren spell at the Emirates Stadium 10 days ago. There was another delicate chip into the Stretford End goal last night for the England striker, another mesmerising display from Cristiano Ronaldo, but it was the ease with which United restored confidence and winning ways following the late collapse at Arsenal in their last League outing that strengthened Ferguson's conviction in the championship credentials of his existing squad. Prior to the arrival of Aidy Boothroyd's spirited but limited team the United manager ordered 12 wins from the 14 remaining Premiership fixtures to claim a first title in four seasons - now they seek 11. The only downside is they will not all be as simple as this. "It was very comfortable," the Scot admitted. "Watford set out their stall to defend but when they put two up front in the second half and became more positive, the game opened up. We made and missed a lot of chances, but you have to be satisfied with 4-0. Watford have had a hard season and there was no need for more than that. We are another goal better off than Chelsea. It has been a good night." Ferguson rates Boothroyd as one of the brightest young managers in the game and insists his star will remain in the ascendancy even if, as appears ever likely, Watford's Premiership status has disappeared in the opposite direction at the end of this campaign. He is unlikely to alter that opinion following the glowing eulogy that Boothroyd paid on Ferguson's doorstep. "This team can be one of the best in the world because they have world-class players and I think they will go on and do it this year," he said. "And he [Ferguson] is a winner. And a bad loser." As are Ferguson's charges, Rooney and Ronaldo in particular, and though the calibre of the opposition has to be considered before United can claim to have solved the problems that contributed to their demise at the Emirates the duo's invention, purpose and desire augurs well for the final hurdles that remain in this campaign. The United manager maintained his policy of rotating only when the circumstances allow, granting Gabriel Heinze, John O'Shea and Kieran Richardson first starts of 2007 and resting Henrik Larsson on the bench for the first time since his loan move from Helsingborg, and though Watford's priority was clearly to contain the League leaders their task proved a thankless one once United's talents found their rhythm and the visitors had contributed to their own demise. Openings had been scarce until Jay DeMerit inexplicably pulled Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to the floor inside the penalty area in the 19th minute and gave the referee Mike Dean little option than to point to the spot. Ronaldo, presented with the Fipro Young Player of 2006 Award before kick-off, stepped forward, paused, and made no mistake with the opportunity that presented itself from 12 yards. Though Chris Powell almost equalised when his cross drifted dangerously towards goal and prompted Tomasz Kuszczak to push the ball against his own bar, United were dominant throughout, Rooney to the fore with flicks and vision that parted the visitors' rearguard almost at will. Unable to rely on their own finishing skills - Richardson and Solskjaer slicing wide and high respectively in the second half - United received another helping hand when Lloyd Doyley headed beyond his own goalkeeper on the hour. Pressure off, top began to toy with the bottom club whilst massaging their goal difference in the process. Larsson was on the field only four minutes when he exchanged passes with Rooney and sent the Watford goalkeeper the wrong way with a delicate finish, his second goal for the club, with the best saved until last. Appropriately it was United's main protagonists at the heart of the move as Ronaldo glided through the yellow lines, flicked the ball over Watford's central defence with the outside of his boot, and watched as Rooney lifted his fourth goal in three games over Richard Lee. "We have got the bit between our teeth again," came the Glaswegian warning.' --------------------------------- [23] George Burley on Bale --------------------------------- Posted Thursday, February 1, 2007 by ed: "I said all along Gareth would be staying with us until at least the end of the season and hopefully longer so it should not come as a surprise to see him here. He is an outstanding player who will move to a top club one day but I have always said the most important thing is what is right for his development. I feel he needs another 18 months and to be playing regularly in order for him to progress. I have had a long chat with him and his parents. He is a level-headed lad who has not been fazed by the speculation and is very focused on helping this club win promotion." --------------------------------- [22] Skip to my Lou Macari on Rooney --------------------------------- Posted Thursday, February 1, 2007 by ed: Hes playing with confidence now. I think his confidence had deserted him a little bit. Not just in goalscoring terms, but his touch as well. His touch and passing ability is superb, but it had deserted him. Gary Palliste Nobody could question his work-rate during that spell. What impressed me most was that he didnt hide or shirk responsibility. He still battled away and wanted to get on the ball. At the moment Wayne is scoring goals and it has given a real boost, which you can see in his performances. --------------------------------- [21] Fergie on the two R's --------------------------------- Posted Thursday, February 1, 2007 by ed: Ronaldo was fanastic. And with Wayne, if he starts to score single goals in games, that could be a tremendous difference for us. I made some changes to the team, but that will be important because when it gets down to it, the players are fresh because they have got football under their belts. http://www.jdoqocy.com/click-2051413-5590780 Check http://www.rednews.co.uk to view the image which has been removed from plain text email version of news http://www.kqzyfj.com/click-2051413-8829216 Argos Latest offers and price drops! You can see with the team that they have the bit between their teeth. There is enthusiasm and confidence there. It was comfortable. It was one of these games where Watford set out to defend and it was very difficult at first because they put so many men behind the ball. I thought that the first goal might have opened things up, but it wasnt until the second half that Watford had a more positive outlook. That opened the game up for us. We missed chances. But at 4-0 you have to be satisfied. Its a good scoreline. --------------------------------- [19] Larsson on Rooney --------------------------------- Posted Thursday, February 1, 2007 by ed: "As long as you move well when you have a player like Wayne around you're always likely to get chances. I thought Wayne was going to go for goal initially, but at the last second he slipped a great ball through to me. I got a good touch on it and was delighted to see it go in past the keeper. It's easy to play with great players and Wayne is definitely a great player. He has superb vision and can score goals. I enjoy playing with the likes of Wayne and Cristiano [Ronaldo] immensely. At 35-years-old I didn't expect to get this kind of chance again. So to be here now playing alongside them is fantastic. We didn't enjoy losing the Arsenal game but none of us were worried about the response. As professional footballers you have to pick yourselves up and get on with it. The manager has a lot of experience of these situations and he instils a lot of confidence into the players which is very important. There are some good characters in the dressing room and there is a great team spirit." --------------------------------- [18] The Best --------------------------------- Posted Thursday, February 1, 2007 by ed: The Best Check http://www.rednews.co.uk to view the image which has been removed from plain text email version of news M, L (28 inches high, 22 inches wide), XL (29 inches high, 24 inches wide) and XXL sizes available Just £15 inc p&p UK, £17 ROW - product code is, simply, BEST You can order by sending a cheque to Red News, P.O.Box 176, Manchester, M16 8LG. I know I'm a good coach and if anyone is surprised about top clubs like Chelsea wanting me, then I just point to my record. I have coached teams which have reached the Champions League final four times, I've won Serie A five times and of course the World Cup, too. If anyone thinks that a move to a big English club is beyond me, then I'd just say 'give me a break'. I'm ready, willing and enthusiastic to coach in England, even though I know that people mistakenly say I can't speak English What such people forget is that football is multi-lingual - every major club has players from many different countries and I can speak enough English and French as well as Italian. There are already a number of foreign coaches working in England, so I cannot see why people might say that Chelsea is not the place for me. It feels wholly understandable after a year out and given my CV that a big club wants to sign me and I will make my final decision in May." --------------------------------- [13] Barca's Xavi linked --------------------------------- Posted Thursday, February 1, 2007 by ed: "It's true that the contact arrived with my agent Ivan Corretja to play for United but I have a contract with Barca and we have demanded that this (contact) was with the club,. The FAs chief executive is a proud Liverpool fan and after explaining how he introduced the American Glazer family to the special niche Manchester United holds in British social history, he is now keen to adopt the same role with whoever wins the battle to take over at Anfield. Foreign ownership of football clubs is an emotive issue, he said. Football clubs arent passive things. They are usually emotional, they are usually part of peoples lives and they make a lot of peoples lives tick. However, the reality of the situation we live in is that nationality is something we dont discriminate on. But whichever way the deal falls at Liverpool, those people need to know how passionate Merseyside people are about their football clubs, just how important those football clubs are in making the city tick and how proud that city is of its football clubs. Barwick revealed how he has spoken to both the Glazer family and West Hams new owner, Eggert Magnusson, about the part those clubs play in their supporters lives. The Glazers came to see me regarding their takeover of Manchester United, he explained. We actually went to the Premier League to meet Richard Scudamore and we discussed the commercial realities of life in the Premiership. But for me it was more about discussing the history and heritage of where Manchester United stood in terms of English football and where English football stood in European and world football and help them get a fix on what they were buying into.' --------------------------------- [7] ChinaDaily article on Dong --------------------------------- Posted Thursday, February 1, 2007 by ed: http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/cndy/2007-01/31/content_796937.htm http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/cndy/2007-01/31/content_796937.htm 'Chinese soccer desperately needs a star, and English Premier League giants Manchester United believe they have found one. With a new 3-year contract at the biggest club in the world and a place in the first-team squad, the stage should be set for 21-year-old striker Dong Fangzhuo to make himself a national hero, adored by China's hundreds of millions of soccer fans. But nothing is that simple. Dong Fangzhuo makes his first appearance for Manchester United during a friendly match against Beijing Guo'an in July, 2005. Wu Zhiyi His new contract comes at a time when Manchester United is looking to milk the commercial potential of Asia's legion of fans, adding fuel to the theory that Dong is marketing ploy first, soccer player second. And, after two and a half seasons playing in the second tier of Belgian soccer, questions remain over whether he has the ability to ever fit in alongside stellar teammates such as Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo. Eyebrows were raised in January 2004 when Manchester United bought the then unknown teenager from Chinese Super League side Dalian Shide for a fee that could rise to $7 million. As one British newspaper noted, United "have no qualms in splashing out such a fee for the player as they know they will swiftly make their money back because of their huge popularity in the Far East." Dong was seen as a commercial signing, and when it emerged that he would have to spend at least two years on loan at Manchester United's Belgian farm team Royal Antwerp while he qualified for a British work permit, he became something of a joke, a business plan that had backfired badly. However the club was not ready to write him off just yet, especially as he had started finding the back of the net. He ended his career at the Belgian club with an impressive 35 goals in 61 appearances, albeit most of them after the club had been relegated to the second tier, and he has now made seven appearances for China, scoring one goal. "We're all excited he has eventually arrived and can start playing," United manager Alex Ferguson was quoted as saying on the club's website when the contract was inked two weeks ago. "He sacrificed two and a half years at Royal Antwerp, which showed great patience and determination. He is quick and athletic and he can only improve by training with the first team squad here." Club officials at Royal Antwerp are equally positive about his ability. "His pace is terrific, it is one of his main assets," General secretary Paul Bistiaux told China Daily. "His technique is good, but has still room for improvement. "I am convinced that he will play even better in a team where he is surrounded by top players." Nevertheless, there are commercial factors behind the signing. Since the early 1990s Manchester United has established itself as a global brand, with credit cards, club shops and soccer schools around the world, and they are not about to ignore China. Last week the club announced record profits of more than $60 million on turnover of $324 million. The bulk of this was put down to a lucrative new shirt sponsorship deal and an expanded stadium capacity of 76,000, which means $4 million in ticket sales alone for each home match. At the same time Dong was being granted a work permit, the club hired their first full-time marketing manager for Asia, Rob James. "On the playing side it is absolutely down to his ability," he told China Daily. "His ability got him where he is." "Obviously, it is great that he is Chinese," he added. "But that has nothing to do with it." James revealed the club is planning an Asian tour this summer, with one date already confirmed in Malaysia. The Asian tour will likely include China, where the young striker first appeared in the famous red shirt in 2005. Although James would not confirm the tour details, the club plans to launch Manchester United credit cards in China. "We will if we can work with the right partner. It is about finding the right relationship," he said. The credit cards have been a hit in South Korea, spurred on by the appeal of midfielder Park Ji-sung, who joined the club in 2005. "At the latest count, we have 610,000." Premier League rivals Chelsea have recently teamed up with Sina.com to launch a Chinese language website, and James said Manchester United, whose website is currently in English and Thai, are hoping to do the same this year. "We do have plans for different languages, we're looking for partners. We hope to have it up and running this year." Also on the agenda is expansion of the club's Manchester United Soccer Schools, where children can experience top-level coaching from the club's staff. "We are looking to grow these," said James. "We've had success in Dubai, Hong Kong and Canada. We are looking to open in the region, looking at all locationsit's very much on the board." Asian soccer business experts believe Dong's playing and commercial potential are inextricably linked. "With Manchester United's upfront interest in expanding its brand and commercial ventures into Asia, particularly China, Dong's commercial value to the club would have been assessed and valued as an important factor," says Geoffrey Gold, editor of Asian Football Business Review. "However, unless a player is acquired at an absurdly cheap price, it is illogical to assume that football potential is not of equal if not more importance to a club requiring football honors to maintain its global status. "Dong getting a regular game may substantially increase the television viewing audience for Manchester United games in China. If consistent, the larger numbers will increase the club's attractiveness for sponsorship and co-branded commercial ventures. AIG confirmed that it paid a record sponsorship for Manchester United because it could take its insurance brand into China. Tourism Malaysia and Air Asia ditto," he said. "Brand development is a long-term venture, so as Chinese disposable incomes increase, and piracy in China decreases, Manchester United can expect expediential growth in a wide variety of products." --------------------------------- [6] Get something off your man breasts --------------------------------- Posted Thursday, February 1, 2007 by ed: Want to get something off your chest? We have a terrific bunch of lads. There is a good spirit among them, so we will just get on with it." --------------------------------- [52] Barca boss on Ronaldo --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, January 31, 2007 by ed: Frank Rijkaard "Without a doubt, he is one of the most valuable players in world football. But there are only rumours at the moment, there is nothing concrete. I must say that yes, he is a great player, but we cannot do anything else at this moment. It is still too soon to comment on future signings. We still have many games to play and this group has much to demonstrate." --------------------------------- [51] Rules bent for Liverpool --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, January 31, 2007 by ed: from Sky 'Liverpool have been given permission by Fifa to sign West Ham outcast Javier Mascherano. A deal between Liverpool and West Ham to take Mascherano to Anfield had been agreed, but the move was being upheld by Fifa's transfer regulations The Reds petitioned the game's governing body to sign Mascherano even though the Argentine has already played for two clubs in the past 12 months. Fifa rules forbid any player turning out for more than two clubs over a one-year period between 1st July and 30th June the following year. However, Liverpool claimed that the player should be allowed to move on as he does not figure in West Ham's plans and Fifa have granted them special dispensation to push through a deal for the former River Plate ace. A statement from Fifa read: "After due consideration of all aspects, the Fifa single judge ruled that 'upon registration for Liverpool FC during the present registration period, the player Javier Mascherano is eligible to play in official matches with the said club with immediate effect'." "Particular emphasis was given to the safeguard of the sporting integrity and the crucial element of overlapping sports seasons between associations, notably in cases in which a sports season starts prior and ends beyond July 1. "Yet, the single judge made it clear that such permission can only be granted under very restrictive preconditions, such as they exist in the case at stake, yet never occurred in a case that was submitted to the attention of the competent deciding bodies at an earlier stage. "In particular, he emphasised that a series of elements related, on the one hand, to the duration and the positioning of the relevant sports seasons as well as to the respect of the registration periods and, on the other hand, to the duration and respect of the employment contracts concerned, need to be cumulatively met." --------------------------------- [50] More Carlos --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, January 31, 2007 by ed: "The points are important. Clearly, we would prefer to be six points in front rather than three or four. But we cannot afford to rely on it and we must not be satisfied. We want more and we need more. Once we start to lose focus and concentrate on what other teams are doing, that is when we will start to make more mistakes. At the moment, the title is between us and Chelsea. But we must not forget we are in a very difficult league. Teams like Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham and others are perfectly capable of interfering in one way or another. If you want to become champions, you cannot afford to make mistakes like we did last season. When you make huge mistakes like that you pay a very high price indeed. We need to consider that result but we don't want to spend too much time dwelling on it, we want to think about the things we are doing right and emphasise how well we have been playing." http://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-2051413-10356806 Check http://www.rednews.co.uk to view the image which has been removed from plain text email version of news http://www.jdoqocy.com/click-2051413-10367483 City breaks from £99 Check http://www.rednews.co.uk to view the image which has been removed from plain text email version of news --------------------------------- [49] Fergie talks stats --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, January 31, 2007 by ed: "There are 14 games left and we've got a six-point lead. There are some fantastic games ahead. And it's a challenge that we hope we can enjoy. If we win the league after going to places like Chelsea and Liverpool, then we deserve it. But if win the other 12 games left do you think we will win the league? I think so. We know we've still to go to Liverpool and Chelsea. But Chelsea still have to go to Arsenal, which won't be easy. We don't have to play Arsenal again, so we can forget about them until next season. We drew with Chelsea at home and beat Liverpool. So we've only got two games left of major importance in the sense of playing the other top teams - and both of those are away, at Liverpool and Chelsea." --------------------------------- [48] uefa.com interview with Pique --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, January 31, 2007 by ed: 'Gerard Piqué has impeccable football pedigree. The grandson of famed FC Barcelona vice-president Amador Bernabéu - no relation of Real Madrid CF's Santiago - the defender was developed by the Camp Nou side before being signed by Manchester United FC aged just 16 in 2004. Within four months he had made his first-team debut, and throughout he has been a regular for Europe's strongest nation at youth level. Ferguson's rage His rise continued apace in 2006. Two years after helping Spain win the UEFA European Under-17 Championship, he went one better for the U19s in Poland last summer, setting up Alberto Bueno's winner in the final against Scotland. However, the identity of Spain's opponents did not endear Piqué to patriotic United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, a man he has described as like a second father. "He rang me after the final and said he was angry because we had beaten Scotland," Piqué told uefa.com. "I told him it was my job and he was going to have to be happy and proud because someone from his club had won. I think in the end he was happy!" I'm playing games and scoring goals, even though I am a defender. But I hope next season I'll go back to Manchester and get a place Zaragoza loan Piqué, who turns 20 on Friday, made his first English Premiership start last March before being sent on loan to Real Zaragoza for the 2006/07 campaign, though he remains under contract at Old Trafford until 2009. It has become normal for Sir Alex to send his young prospects out to another club to sharpen them before using them regularly. "I talked to Sir Alex and agreed it was the best decision for me and for the club, I can get first-team experience," said Piqué, who even scored on his Primera División debut against Villarreal CF. "It's going well. I'm playing games and scoring goals, even though I am a defender. But I hope next season I'll go back to Manchester and get a place. I talked to the boss and he said he wanted to come to the stadium to see us play. I will try to show him that everything is going fine and I'm playing well." Ten appearances for Spain's sixth-placed side attest to his progress. 'New life' That he has picked up English parlance like "the boss" shows how quickly he was able to settle when he first moved to Manchester. "When you first go, you don't have your family or friends, you have to start a new life," Piqué remembered. "You meet new people and after six to seven months you are happy again." But then he did have an example to follow - his friend Cesc Fabregas left Barcelona for Arsenal FC not long before Piqué's own English switch and they remain close. "Every week we try to talk. But we don't always talk about football, we talk about our lives. We've played together since we were six or seven, after that he went to Arsenal I went to United, but we are still in touch." Spanish success The victory in the U19 finals was especially sweet for Piqué and many of his team-mates, due to their disappointment at U17 level two years before when a Spain side including Fabregas lost the final to a late goal from hosts France. "A lot of the players were in France, so we were extra motivated to win in Poland," Piqué said. "We didn't want to repeat that experience. We tried to react and we succeeded." However, Spain's stellar record at youth level - it was their third U19 title in five years - meant they knew expectations back home were high. "It can be hard," Piqué admitted. "All the country thinks you are going to win the tournament before it starts. This is very difficult to handle. Also, we are the favourites and all the teams respect you. You have to use that respect to change it into fear, make them scared of you." I remember when we got to the airport a lot of people were waiting for us and that was a great experience, you feel you have a country behind youGerard Piqué Youth tournaments Certainly, he has enjoyed his experience of UEFA's youth finals. "These tournaments are nice, as you develop, having fun," he said. "It is hard as you are young, 17 or 19, but once it has happened you are better as a player." Next on the agenda is adding to his two U21 caps, then in the summer gaining another triumph at his generation's farewell to youth football at the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada, to repeat the celebrations he experienced last July. "I remember when we got to the airport a lot of people were waiting for us and that was a great experience, you feel you have a country behind you and following you," Piqué said. "I hope to repeat that after the World Cup in Canada." And doubtless many more times in his career.' ------------------------------------------------------------------------ For United books, videos, DVDs etc http://www.rednews.co.uk/ama.php?id=amazon ------------------------------------------------------------------------ For the very latest news check out the website: http://www.rednews.co.uk Yahoo!
