------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------------------- [1] There is NO news here today... please take just a minute or two to read why... --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 30, 2007 by ed: There is NO news here today... please take just a minute or two to read why... RN wishes everything ran on free air, trust us we do. But it doesn't. And we can't. We get an extremely high amount of hits nowadays, a phenomenal amount for an independently run, non funded service, this what we consider the best and most extensive United news site on the web. But that high volume isn't transferred to orders of the mag, orders online or use of our online sponsors (amazon, etc). Buying the mag/ordering our goods is all down to personal choice of course, but without support this site and fanzine would wither away and die. There can't be one without the other. Without your support there is no site. RN remains wholly independent, and run by a few matchgoing Reds from their homes, work or bedrooms! And that's pretty unique anywhere in the world for a news service like this (especially a United one), but the way we like it as we remain 100% independent and 100% unofficial, 20 years after we first started. But as a consequence we NEED YOUR HELP to survive. To flourish. Not a major amount, not a pint of your blood, less in fact than a pint of beer costs for each month and YOU get something for EVERYTHING you contribute to here. Ideally we'd like you to take out a subscription if you can't buy the mag at OT. £25 for a years mag in the UK AND guaranteeing free web news to boot as well as entry to our extensive VIP Forum. That is very cheap, and good value surely? Without your support no news today would be no news everyday. We are not joking, our survival depends on it, and you. We thank all of you - especially our loyal readers - who don't just lurk and support RN. We love the way some of you interact with the fanzine, and site, sending e.mails to [EMAIL PROTECTED], contributing, sending gossip, stories, info and helping with appeals. Thanks to all our loyal supporters. We know this begging doesn't go down well with some of you. Do you think we enjoy doing it? We hate doing it, but the ratio of lurkers to people who actually support is now so high we have to put these appeals out. Without your support the fanzine - and the website - wouldn't continue. We pride ourselves with a team of lads - in their spare time - who post news 24 hours a day, continually updating for what we think is continually the most substantial United news service on the web. It is tough as we are a tiny fanzine (you wouldn't believe how tiny) contributed to from home or work (don't tell the boss!) pc's. Scores of people use this site but sadly many, the vast majority, give nothing in return. Just clicking on the ads or using the news page itself doesn't gain us income, in fact if it goes over a limit each month for use, it actually costs us. We ONLY receive income if you order or buy something from us or our sponsors. We want to expand though. We want to provide MORE United news. We want to grow. One simple question - if we weren't around, of course you'll get United news elsewhere, but do you think it would be as substantial, as dedicated, as continuous, as RN provides - EVERY SINGLE DAY? You would miss out. And so would we... We love doing this site, we love doing the news. But we can't front the bills ourselves. Look away now if you want to ignore the appeals. In a way we can understand why so many look away and just hope that someone else will step forward and take care of it. But if some of you do want us to survive, do appreciate the service we provide day in, day out and use the news every single day that we bring it to you for free, and want to keep bringing to you for free, and want to give a little something back (and getting something back in the process) do your bit. We're not asking for the earth, just that those who can do their bit and help the cause by taking up any one of the many great, bargain offers below do so... Thanks for hearing us out and getting this far. 100% Independent. 100% Unofficial. 100% still here. Let's keep it that way. Order online, or by post, fax, or by phone. Subscribe to Red News. The Portuguese winker met with Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson and assistant Carlos Quieroz on Saturday and was banned from speaking about a switch to Spain. But Ronaldo made his feelings clear when offered the chance to see a mocked-up picture of himself in a Real Madrid shirt in a Spanish newspaper. He said: What day is that front page from? Let me see it. The 21-year-old had earlier said: I know of the interest of Real Madrid, but I can say nothing. I met with Carlos Queiroz and Alex Ferguson and they prohibited me to speak of Real Madrid. You must understand because I do not want any problem. --------------------------------- [36] BBC on Rooney case --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 29, 2007 by ed: 'A grandmother suing the Sun over claims she had sex with footballer Wayne Rooney while working as a prostitute has had her case thrown out of court. Patricia Tierney, 52, claimed libel damages of £750,000, saying an article featured "horrible lies" that destroyed her reputation and life. The newspaper published the claims in August 2004. But at Manchester County Court it emerged that she had admitted working as a prostitute in a police statement.' --------------------------------- [35] Ronaldo talks about Madrid... The Sun newspaper is being sued by Patricia Tierney, 50, after it claimed she had sex with the Manchester United and England star at a massage parlour in Liverpool. Mrs Tierney a married mother-of-seven and grandmother of 16 says the allegations, published in August 2004, were false and have destroyed her life. It is understood Rooney, 21, has been put on notice by the court that he may be called as a witness. It would mean the footballer reliving his shame in public, after confessing he visited brothels when he was young and stupid. However, if the lawyers for both parties agree an out-of-court settlement, Rooney would be spared giving evidence in the witness box.' --------------------------------- [32] Jonny Evans on Danny Simpson --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 29, 2007 by ed: "I know Danny well. We've played together for United since we were 12 and we lived together for five months at the end of last year when we were both at Antwerp. We spoke last week and he said that he wanted to get out on loan if possible because there were plenty of fit players at United and he didn't think he'd get much of a chance other than the reserves. Then he phoned me the other day to say Sunderland had been in and I was telling him what it was like up here. I told him about us taking 6,000 fans to Sheffield Wednesday last weekend and that I've enjoyed it here. Danny will never let you down. He's a really honest lad, quick, good on the ball and quite strong." --------------------------------- [31] Franz Beckenbauer --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 29, 2007 by ed: "Money talks and I would say United have a good chance - but not until the end of the season. Thousands of empty seats were left filling our TV screens, as sports minister Richard Caborn's plea for cheaper tickets in Mirror Sport proved more necessary than ever before. Caborn feared the decrease in Premiership gates would be mirrored on the opening day of the Fourth Round, and he was right. The average cup gate on Saturday was just 16,850 - until Manchester United's evening kick-off lifted it to just over 21,000. Sunday's gates were better, but they included two of the country's best supported sides - Arsenal and Chelsea - as well as a fierce Midlands derby. And just 26,496, including a Southampton contingent of 1,200, watched Manchester City beat Saints. The fact remains that the huge cost of following a team means many fans can no longer afford to watch their side, and Luton's romantic lunchtime tie with Blackburn on Saturday proved how worrying the situation has become. Manager Mike Newell showed sympathy for his supporters, as just 5,887 turned up to see the Hatters 4-0 home defeat to his former club Rovers. Newell said: "Football's expensive and we've had three home games in the week now. The supporters can't keep digging into their pockets." Caborn has pleaded with clubs to use next season's extra TV revenue to slash ticket prices. However, Fulham and Birmingham took that stance over the weekend and were still unable to pull punters through the door. There were 11,000 empty seats at Craven Cottage and Birmingham drew just 20,041 on a day when they had an opportunity to take a Premiership scalp. And just 8,422 saw Crystal Palace lose to Preston - 9,000 less than turned up for last week's Championship encounter with Hull.' Sooty clouds glowered across the hills as if to say: "Bugger off." A faint smell of meat pies hung in the air. I felt like Lord Stevens of Kirkwhelpington as I climbed terraced streets on the trail of the cheekiest bung in football. It concerned Tommy Taylor, the former Manchester United and England centre forward who, along with the rest of Matt Busby's precocious young shavers, was hoping that 1957 would be their year. I walked past the noisy Victorian school where Tommy once hid behind the bike sheds to avoid Manchester United scouts because he didn't want to leave his home town. He signed professional forms at Oakwell and made such a big impression that Barnsley fast-tracked him into their first team the same season. Apart from investigating backhanders, I also came to visit the grave of a player many considered to be the best striker England ever had 128 goals in 189 games for United; 16 goals in 19 games for England. Tommy would have been 75 today. Knowing there weren't many members of his immediate family left to pay their respects, I made the short trip to Monk Bretton churchyard myself. Why? Because when I was at junior school, he symbolised everything that was exciting about the Fifties. The Lone Ranger was on telly; the Everly Brothers were on song; Tommy Taylor was on fire. In 1957, United embarked on a mission, that was destined to fail until Alex Ferguson came along to win the League, FA Cup and European Cup Treble. Busby's Babes went thrillingly close but never got a second chance. Taylor and the cream of that United team were killed at Munich the following February. He'd just turned 26. Barnsley finally owned up to the bung that Lord Stevens overlooked. It was paid to Lily Wilby, a club employee who served pots of tea to Busby and his assistant, Jimmy Murphy while transfer negotiations stretched into the night. According to newspaper reports, at least 14 First Division clubs chased Taylor when Barnsley decided they had to sell him to survive. The leading contenders were Cardiff, Derby and Manchester United. Sheffield Wednesday were also desperate for a goalscorer because Derek Dooley's injured leg developed gangrene and had to be amputated. They couldn't meet the asking price, which spiralled towards the record £34,000, Wednesday had already paid Notts County for Jackie Sewell. Barnsley and Busby eventually shook hands on £30,000 but to avoid burdening the 21-year-old Taylor with such a price tag, Busby signed a cheque for £29,999 and slipped Lily a quid. Good psychology. Tommy continued at Old Trafford where he'd left off at Oakwell and Lily treated herself to a new hairdo. You have to admire the player's nonchalance in the midst of the country's most talked-about transfer. With Fleet Street sweating on his choice of suitors, Taylor played snooker or watched television at his girlfriend's house. When the deal was agreed, the projectionist at his local cinema interrupted the film with an on-screen plea: "Would Tommy Taylor report to the football ground as soon as possible." Fifty years ago this month, United had a second successive League championship in their sights and were two steps along the road to Wembley. Taylor scored once in the 4-3 defeat of Hartlepool in round three and twice as United walloped Wrexham 5-0 in the fourth round. More impressively, he and Manchester United sent a tremor through Europe by demolishing Anderlecht 10-0. Dennis Viollet scored four goals and Tommy a hat-trick. Next to Eric Cantona, Taylor was probably the best bit of business United ever did. The Treble came closer as United polished off Everton, Bournemouth and Birmingham City to reach the FA Cup final while knocking out Borussia Dortmund and Athletic Bilbao to set up a European semi-final against Real Madrid. It all went horribly wrong at Wembley. United were odds-on favourites to win the FA Cup. Nobody could foresee the role Aston Villa's winger, Peter McParland, would play. While challenging for a high ball, McParland crashed into United's goalkeeper, Ray Wood after only six minutes. Wood was taken off on a stretcher with a fractured cheekbone. It would be another 10 years before substitutes were allowed. Although Jackie Blanchflower performed heroics as a makeshift keeper, two goals by McParland left Busby's 10 men with a near-impossible task. Taylor reduced it to 2-1 with a thunderous header and Wood was sent back on as an outfield player. There was nothing either could do to reverse a major upset. Happy birthday, Tom. People forget that you had a better England scoring ratio than Bobby Charlton, Gary Lineker AND Jimmy Greaves. Some forget that you banged in a few for Barnsley before you left. When I inquired at their reception desk about the Tommy Taylor plaque, I might have been speaking Mandarin. Even the groundsman wasn't sure who you were or where it was. Twenty six years were just a tiny speck.' --------------------------------- [28] Bloomberg talk about ticket bonds --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 29, 2007 by ed: 'Manchester United Plc, the world's second-largest soccer club by revenue, may follow the lead of rival Arsenal Holdings Plc and sell bonds backed by ticket sales to cut its interest charges. Deutsche Bank AG and Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc are looking at ways of raising money for United later this year, including a sale of asset-backed bonds, said people familiar with the club's plans who declined to be identified because the discussions are private. United needs to refinance debt because it's accruing interest as high as 20 percent on loans used by U.S. billionaire Malcolm Glazer for his $1.4 billion takeover of the team in 2005. London-based Arsenal cut the cost of borrowing by 50 percent when it sold debt secured by ticket sales in July, the first public issue of asset-backed debt by a European team. The club should dramatically lower debt service charges, assuming they do it right,'' said Stephen Schechter, who has helped U.K. soccer clubs Leeds United, Leicester City and Newcastle United raise money through his London-based firm Schechter & Co. Philip Townsend, director of communications at the club in Manchester, England, declined to comment. Manchester United reduced its annual interest costs by 28 million pounds when it refinanced debt in July, even though it increased its total borrowing to 660 million pounds ($1.3 billion) from 580 million pounds. The club's outstanding debt includes 135 million pounds of high-interest loans known as payment-in-kind notes, Townsend said earlier this month. The interest becomes payable when the club decides to repay the debt. The Manchester team, whose star players include Portugal winger Cristiano Ronaldo and boasts David Beckham among its alumni, leads the English Premier League with 14 games in the season remaining. The winner of the league next year will get 50 million pounds in television and prize money, an increase from 30 million pounds for the current contest. United beat Portsmouth on Jan. 27 in the fourth round of Football Association Cup, England's top soccer competition that the Manchester side has won a record 11 times. Manchester United, which charges as much as 741 pounds for a season ticket, increased capacity at its Old Trafford stadium by 8,000 this year. Average attendance at Premiership games is 75,766, the club said in an e-mailed earnings statement Jan. 26. By selling debt secured using income from ticket sales, Manchester United may be able to get the highest AAA credit ratings for its bonds, reducing interest costs. Arsenal's 210 million pounds of 25-year bonds pay interest at 5.142 percent a year. The money was used to pay for its new Emirates Stadium in London. By insuring its securities with New York-based Ambac Assurance Corp., Arsenal obtained AAA grades from Standard & Poor's and Fitch Ratings. Without the insurance, known as a wrap, the bonds would have the lowest investment-grade rank of BBB-, according to S&P. Companies rated BBB on average in July paid about 105 basis points more than the U.K. government to borrow in pounds for 15 years and longer, according to Merrill Lynch & Co. indexes. Arsenal paid half of that, with a yield premium, or spread, of 52 basis points more than the 4.75 percent U.K. government bond due 2020. The spread on Arsenal's bonds due in 2029 has narrowed to 46 basis points more than the benchmark, according to the Royal Bank of Scotland. A basis point is 0.01 percentage point. Manchester United said sales were 165.4 million pounds for the year ending June 2006, compared with 157.2 million pounds for the 11 months through June 2005. Pretax profit was 30.8 million pounds compared with 10.8 million in the period a year earlier. Revenue will show dramatic growth'' in the next two years, Chief Executive Officer David Gill said in an earnings statement last week. We can take a longer-term view when we look at numbers of fans attending soccer matches,'' said Robert Robinson, the S&P analyst who rated Arsenal's bonds. This sort of deal relies on numbers of football fans going to matches.'' --------------------------------- [27] We'll have the Cup draw --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 29, 2007 by ed: as it happens from 1.30pm Website Promotion Made Easy!
