Answer it yourself:
find  /etc/ -type f -newer /var/log/dmesg.2.3.99-pre3
(you may find a better file; perhaps one touched by shutdown & not bootup) 
I note that this is not an especially good file to choose, but it 
illustrates the principal. In my case I rn the pre1 kernel; running againt 
that throws up a few names, some I recall fiddling with,

then make decisions about whatever files show up on your system.
