Me thinks there may be a different problem here.  What does rpm -qi show as 
the version of xv you have installed?  It should be xv-3.10a-10.i386.rpm.

Did you do an upgrade or an install?

I also ran an strace on xv; the only libc calls were to libc.so.6, ther were 
no calls to libc5.

Puzzling.
