If you want to use metro-x then don't follow any of the instructions
for removing metro-x and installing XFree86.

You don't need the exact monitor and name. If you have a 17in monitor
then you just find the appropriate settings for your monitor. Actually 
you can use settings for larger monitors if your max resolution isn't
supported by the 17in monitors listed.

configX is the Metro-x configuration program. They have a non-x curses 
version as well.

When you install the X-Server a link is made from /etc/X11/X to the
appropriate X server. If you do "ls -la /etc/X11/X" then you'll see
which server you are now linked to.
