Bingo. Yes, that appears to have fixed the problem. Previously,
when I had run "make mrproper" I had followed it up with a "make xconfig"
which, apparently, has problems of it's own. Running "make mrproper"
before doing the cp or the "make menuconfig" appears to work.

So it seems. In numerous clicks of the rpms. Now, I'll just
remember to run "make mrproper" prior to configuring a new set of
kernel sources from RedHat.

I hadn't had any problems with "make xconfig" previously. Is
this also a problem introduced by a RedHat modification?

Thanks to everyone for the feedback!
