I usually re-program Ctrl-Alt-Del to do a shutdown instead of a reboot. It's really simple: Edit /etc/inittab and edit this line: ca::ctrlaltdel:/sbin/shutdown -t3 -r now Change it to: ca::ctrlaltdel:/sbin/shutdown -t3 -h now and save. After the next reboot, you can shut down your machine cleanly with Ctrl-Alt-Del.
