The mother of a good friend of mine is a VP for IBM (in sales), and according to his mother, IBM is still bound by M$ contract to do this.

IBM would be the best bet.
sadly, for all the hype coming out of IBM these days about
how they're firmly behind linux and are investing bazillions
of dollars in it, it appears that you still can't buy a thinkpad
that doesn't have windows pre-loaded on it.

i'll finally start taking IBM seriously when they sell either
a linux-loaded laptop or, even better, a blank one. IBM
can certainly talk the talk. time for them to walk the walk.

Is it IBM's choice to continue this practice?
Or are they still bound by legal contractual obligations to ship with an MS operating system?

Same thing with Dell I think. The only way I could get around this last year
was to buy a PowerEdge with no OS loaded from their Business sales.
Loaded Linux on it and its actually a nice workstation.

Anyone know if IBM is contractually bound? I will be in the market for a new Thinkpad soon and would like to know.
