Are you sure you're in fb mode? My grub config boots on this: kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18-26.7.x ro root=/dev/hda7 hdd=ide-scsi vga=0x305 Read /usr/src/linux-2.4/Documentation/fb/vesafb.txt to know what number to pass to the vga option.
