Does all this discussion mean that no RH 8.1 will be released?
Correct. Please see http://www.matrixlist.com/pipermail/leaplist/2003-March/029087.html
If one goes from 8.0 to 9.0 should it be from scratch (argg...)? If not, will
the migration be stable (I worry about old items hanging around corrupting the
new stuff)?
It's not 9.0. It's 9.
I believe that Red Hat is still supporting upgrades - i.e. you can upgrade in place from 8.0 to 9. The documentation will be out soon - it's always released at the same time as the product so in a week you can check for the definitive, supported approach.
I wouldn't try an upgrade if you have anything other than redhat rpm's installed
the release is not binary compatable with Codeweavers Office, or many of the
third party binary RPM's I had installed. Something to do with big glibc differences.
If you have a machine you have been using for a long time with 8.0, I would wait a
while before trying to make the move to 9, (just so that you can give all the third
party vendors time to catch up in their FAQ's and HOWTO's).
And if you have any add on binary software products like wineX or Codeweavers
or Evolution Connector, you should wait until there are "Official" updates.
