Sorry, one follow-up to my post. Another advantage to using rsync is that it will pick up where it left off if your dial-up gets disconnected.
rsync can also be configured to run over ssh (which is actually how it's normally configured), but if you haven't used ssh before then it's a bit difficult to get started.
