I personally don't mind the tighter wm's, but really, I don't want to
set up anything additional that I don't really need.  Like I said,
he's not going to do much with it (I hope), and he's been hacking on
this blasted PowerMac downstairs for a while and has gotten use to
the OS X interface, so GNOME doesn't scare him as much.  Basically he
just wants to be able to say he can actually use it when I'm not
around, instead of relying solely on me for everything that has to do
with it.  It's a political thing.  Thanks for the input though.

I would recommend that you start X only if necessary (= when your
boss
uses it). It shouldn't be too hard for him to log in and then issue
the
command 'startx'? If he is not using the root account, then put
'startx'
in his login scripts or something to get X automatically started when
he
logs in.

And don't use Gnome, use a lightweight wm like Blackbox of XFCE. If
your
boss is very Windows-only type of guy, you might even consider using
XPDE ( http://www.xpde.com/) which I've found quite lightweight also
(though the project is far from being finished or stable).

Regards,
Peter
