It uninstalls the currently installed kernel package and removes the kernel module files for the currently running kernel. In case the still running kernel needed to load a module, it would fail. And imagine the new kernel doesn't work at all or some of its drivers don't work, e.g. your network driver. With rpm -ivh you keep the previous kernel packages installed as backup kernels.




It's really bad when the mkinitrd fails, and you can't create a new as can't load the loop module. Or you find that the kernel doesn't work on your hardware.
