Have you downloaded the most recent version of Compress-Zlib? Try the
install exactly as I've suggested and see if it still breaks on you.
Perhaps you have an older version... 1.22 was released on June 20.
In fact, according to the changelog...
1.22 - 17 June 2003
* Makefile.PL now displays a warning about not installing
Compress::Zlib via the CPAN shell.
