You won't be able to load a current version of Red Hat Linux on it, but that doesn't mean it's dead. Go to http://www.alphalinux.org/ and do some reading. I believe that SuSe still supports the Alphas. Note, however, that you may be better off getting an Intel system. They're cheap, and unless you've got something like a DS10 that's being freed up, you'll find that that the Intel systems will easily outperform the Alpha for many applications. Alpha Linux will give you grief here and there.
