You won't be able to load a current version of Red Hat Linux on it, but
that doesn't mean it's dead.  Go to http://www.alphalinux.org/ and do
some reading.  I believe that SuSe still supports the Alphas.

Note, however, that you may be better off getting an Intel system.
They're cheap, and unless you've got something like a DS10 that's being
freed up, you'll find that that the Intel systems will easily outperform
the Alpha for many applications.

Alpha Linux will give you grief here and there.  Most developers assume
that they're running on Intel, and all the packages you find will be
need to be recompiled from sources.
