Your questions lead me to believe you may not be familiar with "nc." It 
is the utility "netcat" which will establish a network socket 
connection between two machines.  It's quite a handy tool to have at 
your disposal.

The use of netcat, of course, was assuming duplicating a drive "via the 
network"  scenario.  You can also pop the "destination drive" into the 
same computer as the "source drive" and all the "netcat (nc)" stuff 
isn't necessary.
