as this sounds like it may work for your project if the capability of the wireless cards you're using are OK.

Nice find, it looks pretty good. It pushes the routing discovery to a custom layer below IP in a pretty clever way. One word of warning though, they don't recommend networks with more than 3 hops so it may not meet the goals of this particular project.
I'll take a look at it....
Would it be possible to use pppoe to solve the networking problem? letting all nodes connect so a "smaller" node using pppoe, and let each node run a pppoe server? Or is this unusable?
