I am going to start from ground zero a little bit 0.

First: Linux make one heck of a back end server!

a> I does not crash. I should send BILL a check and a thank you
letter for as much as the NT boxes go down, do to software problems.
These are servers have only MS software installed. Most problems come
from Exchange. MS has made it pretty stable for SMB files serving. I
have other clients that I have switch them to Linux and they do not have
any problems anymore. System that have been up for a year and have not
been rebooted. I wish NT had a (w) command.
b> I can do a lot with Linux for so little money. A gateway/firewall
to the internet/Fax server/Print server/Auto-tape backup/mail server/SQL
server. Just anything I want on the back end.
c> I just wrote an HTML interface to add/delete a mail only accounts.
This makes the operator never goes to the Linux box. The box does not
even have a monitor or keyboard on it. All the control a HTML interface
for the normal users.

Ok the front end Linux is not so good yet. It needs someone that know
a little basic knowage. The help system need a lot of work. Just do not
put the MS paper clip there for help. But if you are running a canned app
that does not change, Linux is a good front end. You can setup the
X-Windows interface to lock a user into on one or two apps. I have setup
this in a shop the using the Netscape for a SQL database front end. This
system has been up for 6 month. No problem to report with 25 users. I
made the system for the cost of the software needed for a MS solution.

Is the front end here yet. I say no for normal users but for someone
willing to read it is here and is "bad to the bone" the bare bone. I
believe the .*rc files need to go for the normal to like Linux. Ofcouse
will need more apps for Linux.

Enjoy,

Richard
