Qualcomm's Eudora Pro mail client and popper POP3 server support POPSend.
It's too bad many more clients and servers don't support this as it would be
a better solution than all the anti-spam hacks and workarounds that have
been created.

The client checks and sends mail within the same authenticated POP3 session.
It's not SMTP so some of the more recent ESMTP features are not supported,
but it makes spam practically impossible when combined with APOP
authentication (also supported by Eudora and popper).

I've seen a script on some mailing list or another that implemented the
mailcheck/IP system. The /var/log/secure log contains IP addresses that can
be used to create a list of authorized IP addresses. The list would have to
be regularly updated/expired.

It may be easier for them to just use their ISP's mail server.

If it's too good to be true, it's probably Linux.
