Edit your /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf

[servers]
0=/usr/bin/X11/X
1=/usr/bin/X11/X vt08

This works fine with the exception of when doing a shutdown from X. If
you do this, then you will have to fiddle around in both vt7 and vt8
untill it all terminates. Sometimes I've even had to login on vt1 again
just to do a shutdown from the command line.
