Lemme throw out a completely wild guess here...
Perhaps the old brain-dead BIOS just doesn't like LILO being on the MBR ?
There are other LILO configurations,... perhaps something like installing
the LILO bootblock in your /boot or /root partitions and reinstalling
the old MS bootblock on the MBR ??
