tried it and...seems to have fixed whatever was bothering perl and the other 
tools that were complaining!

wonder why the other system is happy.  

Last time I had to poke around with this sort of thing SCO OpenServer 5
was a new product.  Oh how memory fads ( where's my #$% refresh cycle ?)
