Here is what I found while installing RH 7.2 on a sony pcg-fxa32
notebook with the following hardware:

amd duron 900MHx processor
256 MB RAM
ATI Rage Mobility
USB
Firewire
VIA 82C686 (Apollo super south) chipset
8X DVD
15GB HD with 2 partitions
Windows XP installed on the first one (~6GB)
ext'd partition ~9GB

First off let me say that the installation went well. I did the laptop
install with a few extra packages and used disk druid to partition the
drive.

I deleted the single big logical in the extended partition and installed
seperate partitions for /, /var ...

I used up all the room on the device.

I used grub and let it put it on the MBR. It saw the windows install
and let me name it what I wanted to. I used xp for those of you that
are curious.

rebooted and then ..(drum roll please) aieee kernel panic.

sucafractchitgrrr.

several reboots and alot of googleing later I found a bug in
bugzilla.redhat.com ( Bugzilla Bug - 55040)

This said to pass noathlon to the kernel via grub. I did, and viola! up
and running!

I have not played with the sound or tried to play a dvd yet but i did
get the cd to play a music cd so I guess the sound is working.

xp boots like always <flame_retardant>very pretty interface
BTW</flame_retardant>

I am pleased enough that I am about to put all my stuff from the old
dell on the new sony and give the dell to our salesman.

I reall wanted to get this info out there since the noathlon thing was
not something I had seen before at least no remembered seeming it, and
wanted to save someone a lot of time if they are getting apparently
random segfaults and kernel oopes with a 7.2 installation on an athlon
or duron machine.

Now I can go digging to see if the kernel guys have figured out how to
tweak the chipset so that the athlon optimizations can be used.

Thanks for everyone who offered their experience and help.

Bret
