Doesn't this only work if the service has predefined "chkconfig" levels at the top of the init script in /etc/rc.d/init.d? For instance, I seem to remember httpd used to require `chkconfig httpd --level 2345 on` or whatever levels you wanted, and simply `chkconfig httpd on` wouldn't work. This may be pre-7.2, though, or may just be service-specific.
