It comes up with a message saying that it's an invalid password, because it contains your username, but it's just a warning. Because you're root, you can do whatever the hell you like, and it will let you. If you tried to do the same thing as a non-root user, it WONT let you use that password. My system replied with the message "passwd: Authentication token manipulation error".
