Well yeah, when you umount /dev, what do you think you see in there? It's the contents of the dev package. If I boot a non-devfs kernel, my system won't start the devfsd, since /dev won't get mounted, using the device nodes that actually live on the root filesystem. There's nothing wrong with how I'm using devfs/devfsd.
