I found a solution to this in a newsgroup. Basically what you have to do 
is recompile your kernel and get rid of a patch that redhat applied to it. 
Since I didn't want to get into the messy details of having to revoke a 
patch I simply downloaded the 2.4.19 kernel from kernel.org and then the 
pre9 patch. I think there is a pre11 patch out there now, so you of 
course should be able to use that one too. Anyway, you unpack the kernel 
and apply the pre9 patch and then copy the appropriate config file from 
/usr/src/linux-2.4/configs into the 2.4.20-pre9 kernel. Then recompile and 
everything is fixed regarding vmware. In case you need a more detailed 
description of how to do this, let me know.
