It isn't officially supported but there are a couple of ways to work around the problem. Go to vmware's newsgroups for the details. Unfortunately, it looks like the kernel RedHat released yesterday for 7.3 has the same problem (it causes the same crash when you power off or suspend your vmware machine). It looks like it'll have to be VMware that releases an official fix since RedHat backported the patch to 7.3. If you're running VMWare Workstation for Linux under 7.3 you may want to avoid the 2.4.18-17.7.x kernel for now (and RedHat 8.0).
