Ohh, I haven't been to Chicago in a while...
But it would be a wasted trip, my visiting Chicago won't fix your 
hardware. Well, it might, but it would be an expensive service call. :)

All I can offer as evidence is:

Every .img file on that page contains a kernel compiled with gcc 2.96
Each compiled without error, as well as the intermediate builds while I 
was tweaking the config file. Never, not once, did I get a seg fault.

Have you tried compiling on another machine, before condemning the 
compiler?
