RH 8.0 - Locking Up

Hello Folks

I have had some intermittent problems where my installation of RH 8.0 just locks up. I can move the mouse around but nothing is "clickable". Also, I an unable to ssh to it from another machine. Im not asking for a solution, merely advice on how to troubleshoot it. Are there any common mistakes I could have made to get myself in the predicament? Are there any logs that I can look at to glean any information?
