Can you restart X with CTRL-ALT-Backspace? How about switch to a screen with CTRL-ALT-F1? The first might get you back up and running (at the expense of any unsaved data in open applications), the second might give you the opportunity to see what's going on (run top, vmstat, ps etc.)
Have a log in the logs too, /var/log/messages and so on, for anything suspect just before you rebooted the system.
