"iptables -L" does DNS lookups while "iptables -L -n" does not and
prints numeric IP address everywhere. If you have trouble with DNS,
- -L -n is *much* faster than -L.

I'd first have a look at your routing (netstat -nr) and your DNS
setup (/etc/resolv.conf).

Unfortunately, you've come up with only a vague description of the
symptoms:

"everything is sluggish" is far from an ideal problem description.
