i recognize that we learn most of this from experience and a little by
asking/reading etc. i'm not suggesting you didn't approach this the right
way, in fact i think you've done great, but my comment was that "i fail to
understand...".

i guess the question is more appropriate for ron or the others on the list
who would advise to dump 600 pounds of rock. think about it guys, the rock
is yanked out of the ocean, dumped in a boat, hauled ashore and dumped in
some vats or tanks, put in boxes without water and shipped half way around
the world, sometimes arriving five days later to be dumped in a tank where
the ammonia and/or nitrite spike, and the shit is still fine. in fact, we
then have GOOD rock. so to suggest that because you have a slime/hair algae
problem or the water is cloudy or you had an ammonia spike you should throw
out 600 pounds of rock is....well, silly.

glen, FWIW, i would keep all the rock. scrub it and use the crappier pieces
as the base. get good lights and improve the water quality and coralline
algae will start to grow quickly. if you want visual impact from the rock
go buy a couple spectacular pieces. then throw the extra crappy pieces in
the monster sump you talked about.

this isn't meant to piss anyone off, merely a reality check.
