Andrew,
Point of failure is a concern. I wouldn't do this without using a pump that
has an excellent reputation. This thing has never even missed a beat, and I
am not too concerned about a instantaneous failure with this pump. However,
that being said, I do have some extra powerheads that I can use should it go
down. As a matter of fact, I have my mag 24 that could be hooked up in the
Iwakis place and used to provide some water movement while the Iwaki is
being replaced/repaired. All in all, it is a very clean, efficient system
that allows maximum flow with minimum clutter. Litterally, I would need to
have 3-4 other types of pumps to do the same thing this one is doing. It
makes it a pretty clean operation overall. If anything, I would have
preferred an even bigger pump so that I could use it to run my refugium and
maybe a couple more outlets into the tank, but the 700 rlt does a pretty
damn good job. You could literally run your skimmer, UV, and main cirulation
from one pump, with ease. Shoot, you could even throw a chiller on there and
run that if you needed to.......
As I mentioned, it is not the quietest thing in the world. You could lay a
piece of carpet padding and a chunk of carpet down on the floor, that would
help. I have carpeted floor, and then I mounted the pump to a small piece of
wood with a mouse pad between the pump and wood. Keeps the vibration to a
minimum, but the pump itself makes some noise. Its inevitable, when you are
moving that much water, you are going to hear the pump(s) that is/are doing
it. I figure the one Iwaki is probably no more noisy than the 2 or 3
smaller pumps I would have to use. I have heard that the Dolphin pumps are
very quiet, but I also heard that they were having problems with them.
FWIW

Thanks Shane,
Right now I have a SEN 900 running as my main circ pump and a Little
Giant
3MDX running my ETS skimmer. I had originally had a Little Giant
3MDXQ
running as my main circ pump but the thing was way too loud for me.
I have
the tank (a 120G) on a wood floor in the living room so noise is an
issue. I
hadn't thought of using a single pump for the whole system. Do you
worry
about one point of failure ?
As a matter of fact I also have a very small pump circulating water
thru my
UV as well. Do most people use just one pump ?

Andrew,
As mentioned, I use an Iwaki 700 RLT to run my 70 gallon system. I
guess the
question for you is what exactly do you want to run with it? The
reason I
ask it because with my 700 I run a chiller attached to a sea swirl,
a berlin
skimmer, a chemical reactor, and two other outputs. Basically, the
thing
runs my entire system. The only thing I don't use it for is to run
my
refugium. If you plan on using the Iwaki for multiple returns or
really high
water flow, then something in the 700 or higher range would work for
you. I
would get one rated higher than you think you need, cause that will
allow
you some flexibility. The Iwakis run fine with a little back
pressure, so
you can put ball valves on all the outputs and turn them up or down
as you
see fit without damaging the pump.
I am very happy with the performance of my pump. It does however add
a
decent amount of heat to the tank, and although it is not noisy, it
is not
the quietest thing in the world either.
IMO

What is everyone's opinion on the best main circulation pump
available for a
120G ?
Interested in as little noise as possible with limited
(O.K., no)
maintenance.
TIA
