Hi John,
Thanks for the very prompt reply. I'm a real
newbie at this and I'm soaking up WAY too much information to absorb or
reconcile. In particular, I've heard such horror stories about deep sand
beds (and equally frightful stories about what happens when they are NOT
used). Doesn't a DSB need critters in there to keep it stirred up?
Also was told that a refugium was necessary if going the DSB route. Right
now I need to be able to follow a KISS format (as well as keeping it cheap
- I'm broke from buying the big setup (g)). The last thing I'm looking for
is to open yet another can of worms here. The group is too great for
that.
I'm especially interested in your comment about
soaking SPS corals in iodine solution. (not surprisingly) that's a new one
for me. I assume it's to knock down the risk of infection? What strength
solution should be used, or is it sold in a form that doesn't need mixing?
How long would you hold creatures in the holding tank before shifting them
to the display tank?
Thanks again for all the help,
Larry

Hi, Larry. You have a great plan going to save yourself
from introducing disease to your main display. I would recommend
starting a deep sand bed, using your hang on back filter only for Xtra
circulation and maybe some carbon now and then, and placing internal
power heads for added circulation. You could add more live rock.
Lighting should be intense enough to support whatever you plan on
adding to your display tank. All SPS corals should be soaked in an
iodine solution before introducing to your acclimation and observation
tank. HTH ________________________________________
