True, true.  And then, if it is not the biblical texts that ground the opposition to polygamy in this country, what is it?

But I want an exegetical work that actually deals with the theological issue in depth.  For while some of the biblical patriarchs were indeed polygamists, at least some people say the Bible is hostile to polygamy.  They would say, for example, that many of the patriarchs were monogamists (Adam, Issac), that some of the polygamists were pushed/coerced into polygamy (Jacob tricked by Laban into marrying Rachel, Abraham forced by Sarah's desire for a child into taking Hagar as a concubine), and that some of the polygamists ran into marital difficulties arguably as a result of them taking multiple wives (David, Solomon).  Christians also might add that some passages in the New Testament (say, chapter 5 of Ephesians) erode whatever license the Old Testament gave to polygamy.

This isn't to say that these arguments are persuasive.  Luther didn't find them persuasive.  But I'm just looking for more information at this point.  If someone could provide a handy reference, I'd definitely appreciate it.
