The problem is that the lines aren't perfectly blank, because they also have vertical-bars in them (and the exact character depends on whether I use `-c` or `-cu`). If you look at the diff(1) output of my command, you'll see that the lines prefixed with the "-" (the lines that differ) have blank lines in each cell, but still have the line-drawing around the cells.
