Tim, If the IDer has a PROM then little can and should be done to go another way...a new PROM.
Do you know the PROM part number??? If one reads it often one can determine the method used for setting up the ID. Some simply use one to turn on a tong gen and a zero to turn off and simply clock a counter thur the addresses and maybe use a second data line output that gives a 1 or 0 when finished to stop. If you know the PROM type one might be able to program and replace. One problem is the PROMs are so old they are hard to find.
