Rob,

Very good info on the 12-255. I have the 12-249 which was the first one RS marketed. It has a fixed 5 minute message time which is way too long.

I think I will consider replacing my 249 with the 255 since it will terminate the message on the final EAS tones. I have been looking for this.

OK I found the model number It is a 12-255, Here is a link to a pic
and more info.

At first glance it says it will remain on for 5 min after an alert
but if you look closer it also says

"...VOICE — the Weatheradio sounds an alert for
about 8 seconds, then automatically turns on the
weather (voice) broadcast for 5 minutes or until the
NWS transmits an ending sequence, whichever
comes first...."

Another interesting about this radio is that the alert tone goes
through a different audio path than the main audio so you can choose
to either send the radio's siren or not.

I choose not to and use this time to send a Weather Alert message.
In the past I have also added DTMF tones so people with ham radios
capable of decoding dtmf to unmute could monitor the repeater and be
alerted to severe wx.

Anyway works really well for me. I don't know if they are still
available though

Ron,
I am not sure of the model number, I'll check when I get home tonight, it has a large LCD display on the front, it also has
indoor
and outdoor temp with a wireless remote thermometer.
Yes it does mute and the end of MESSAGE, not MONTH, hard to type
on
the treo, sorry.
It seems to work great, I mounted a DB9 on the back and fed audio
off
the input to the volume control. I have probed around to see if I could find a "COS" like alert signal but no luck so far.
I also have brought out the 3 indicator LED lines but I am not
sure
yet what state they change to when on. It seems that I am hardly
ever
home when an alert goes off and when it does and I am home I don't really want to be working on or near the repeater because the
storm
is usually over us!!
I will get and post the model number when I get home tonight. I
know
it is several years old.
As for RS sales people, they left part of their slogan off...
Remember... RS, You've got questions, We've got answers...Not necessarily the right answers but we'll make them up if it will
make
you happy!

Rob,
I think I read right that the RS SAME receiver you have does
mute
with
the end of message alert tones???
I have the first older RS SAME receiver, the white unit. Which
one
are
you using???
Not sure about your comment on end of month, hi.
I use my receiver remoted for my repeater and also use VOX. The
only
problem is the RS rcvr I have un-mutes on the alert and then
stays
on
for 5 minutes. The actual message is much shorter so is a pain.
I guess I could go to RS and check the newer units out, but I
have
little faith that the RS sale person would have any idea of what
I
am
asking. Even if I got an answer I would not have confidence in
it. If
a RS sales person told me the Sun was coming up tomorrow I would
want a
2nd openion, hi.

I saw a note about a sets sound file being available, can

Best thing you can do is call the local NWS office and request
they
originate a required weekly test.
Alerts are time stamped and there is some debate over how old a
message
is before it is considered expired.
