I never said anything about forbidding normative ABNF, I just explained why I 
think it is wrong.

So you are still saying that the RFCs that use ABNF normatively would have been better if they had not?

Then the question still remains: for an RFC that uses normative ABNF extensively, such as RFC3261, do you seriously think it could have been written with all the normative parts being English? And that would be better?

How would you specify all that syntax in English?
