All systems I have tested it on seem to be affected. So I think I am
missing something obvious to others.

We observed the same last week, when we had a production issue on a RHEL5.3 system that explicitely has all hosts it needs defined in /etc/hosts to make the system independent from DNS. This issue seems to be around for some time.
