When you resolve a hostname on RHEL5 (RHEL4 is affected too) that is in

I don't know if this is related or not .. but what are the contents of
/etc/host.conf ??
Same as default. We looked at that too.
order hosts,bind
All systems I have tested it on seem to be affected. So I think I am
missing something obvious to others.
Do you have nscd running?
Well, we tried with and without. Normally we have it running, but it has
exactly the same behaviour. nscd will not cache any lookups and also
uses DNS to resolve (even when in is in /etc/hosts and not in DNS).
That's why we wanted to look into the behavior without nscd. Can you
confirm the same problem on your infrastructure ?
