We observed the same last week, when we had a production issue on a RHEL5.3
system that explicitely has all hosts it needs defined in /etc/hosts to make
the system independent from DNS. This issue seems to be around for some time.
Did you report this problem to Red Hat ? I was planning to, but wanted to
confirm that this was not already known/debated.
