So - I somehow have both architectures installed.
It is actually normal to have both architectures installed.
# rpm -qf `which package-cleanup`
yum-utils-1.1.16-14.el5.centos.1
You don't actually say what the problem was that happened when you tried
to yum update it. There was a conflict the other day with Centos
packaging of the i386 version on x86_64 which had my yum update spit out
pages of errors about it, trying to install the x86_64 version and
complaining that it conflicted with files owned by the i386 version. The
solution for me was to rpm -e perl.i386 then run yum update again.
