i don't see it talked about a lot, but my personal favorite is Zabbix. Its
fairly easy to get setup initially, I usually am to the task of configuring
what i want to monitor withing half an hour. Sometimes it can be a bit
tedious to configure the monitoring parts, but it has very capable
templating. Its highly extensible, scalable, api accessible, and supports
several database backends. There is even a new project floating around
that provides a mobile front end to it for your iphone/android device.
